Maya Yoga Teacher Training
Why choose this teacher’s training over others?

Baron Baptiste, Author of Journey Into Power
“Eddie and Nicki are gifted teachers who embody the warmth, knowledge, skill and experience that is needed to help anyone deepen their yoga practice and take it to the next level.”

Ziggy Marley

“Eddie and Nicki are helping me along the path. Their teaching has helped me learn how to be present with myself, especially the emphasis on Ujayi breathing! There is nothing like Eddie and Nicki’s teaching.”

“After a few years’ focused study of Ashtanga yoga, I sought out the Maya Yoga Studio in the wilds of Huelo to deepen my understanding of how yoga works on different bodies. As an aspiring teacher of Hatha Yoga, I come into contact with mostly beginners. Facing the challenge of working with an array of bodies- injuries, imbalances, expectations- it became clear that I needed some training. Some practical experience! It was clear to me from the beginning that Eddie and Nicki each hold talents I need to study in order to serve students compassionately and intelligently.

The greatest gift they have brought to my understanding of yoga is how to make the practice accessible to EVERY BODY who desires it. When a student comes into my room with a physical challenge, I want to feel confident in my skill to introduce her to a practice which can heal the body, quiet the mind, and enrich daily life. Eddie’s knowledge of applied anatomy is well tempered by years of working with bodies. Nicki’s brilliant sequencing of led classes comes from a deep understanding of yoga’s intricacies and an ability to tailor classes for multiple levels. The mixed level, led class format provides an accessible daily practice for all. The art of the led class is Nicki’s forte.

I am grateful to Eddie and Nicki for sharing so freely their knowledge and experience. My work with them has brought hands-on experience, educational and traditional background, and confidence in my own evolution as a teacher of Yoga.

“This was about personal practice—whether you choose to teach or not. This training fine-tuned my practice—I feel I have all the tools I need to do the first series. Now, I just need to apply these tools and do the work. Next it will be about taking the information I have learned and bringing into my body.
What I appreciate most about Eddie and Nicki is their honesty. They open themselves up and share what they know from their own individual experience. We learned so much in three weeks. For me, it’s about now taking what they shared and applying it over the next year. That is really a gift.

“I’ve deconstructed my body and my practice here, gaining core knowledge of the body and how it works. As a teacher, I can see people better now—see what’s going on with their bodies. With a better understanding of my own body, I can translate that to others. I have more tools to move my body in a constructive, creative way.
It’s great energy to have two teachers working off each other simultaneously. Their base in Guruji is so solid that you almost feel Mysore here on Maui. They have great respect for the lineage and it made me realize that we aren’t that far removed.

Carrie Bahu :: Santa Barbara, CA
“I’ve had a lot of teaching before, and had many instructors give me directions in class—how to hold a pose, etc. But what happened here is I learned to interpret my own body. It went from interpretation in my head to an interpretation I feel inside my body. Eddie’s knowledge of anatomy and how bodies work helped my see my whole body as interrelated. I now see and feel relationships at work inside of me.
Both Eddie and Nicki are deeply grounded in their personal practice. They bring that info out in a way that penetrates the student.

“I found a muscle in the body that was the most important—the heart. I was helped to look into my heart here.

Nattacia Mantei :: Calgary, Canada
“I came down here with different expectations, and I had to trust that Eddie and Nicki were delivering what they do best. Once I got beyond my expectations, and started doing the personal practice they way we were allowed to do, I saw a dramatic improvement in my practice. I didn’t feel confident that I would be able to teach the first series. So I love their concept that you teach what you do. You find your practice, and teach that level of student. I came into yoga at age 47, realizing that there was a whole baby boomer market that, like me, wants to undo some of their twisting up. Now I feel more confident recognize my challenges and learn what to do about them. I also really appreciated their Rewind Theory. I’m a type A charge ahead type, and to rewind was agonizing—but such a gift. ”

"I just wanted to let Eddie and Nicki know the changes I am experiencing since I took a hip opener session with them last November at Cityoga in Indianaplois, IN. The following morning I woke up and my legs felt 20 years younger (I just turned 65)....very lively. The next day I am walking into work from the parking lot, and I sensed a different feeling in my gait. I was indeed striking more on the center of my heels versus my normal strike towards the outsides. I then remembered Eddie mentioning that this can happen to some people. The other result I've noticed is that my low back has been minimally troublesome since the session. I am thinking that my hips/leg alignment has changed causing better overall posture. I feel I can position my upper body further to the rear when I walk which now feels comfortable and balanced.
Thanks again for an excellent yoga session."

I was lucky enough to join the highly anticipated Maya Yoga workshop this past weekend in Portsmouth, NH. Perhaps you remember me- I was the tall skinny guy with a pony tail, a lazy chataranga, and a whole lot to learn. I had a really interesting experience during the Saturday morning session that I wanted to share with you. First, some quick background. Two years ago, I was an avid volleyball player coming off of a sprained ankle. Then in Feb '09, I came down on the same ankle again and broke my malleolus. Since then, my ankle hasn't been the same and lost a lot of range of motion. My wife had been practicing yoga for years and was encouraging me to give it a try as I was coming off of my latest injury; I was ready to take a hiatus from volleyball, and besides she shamed me into it when I couldn't reach past my mid-shin in a forward bend.

I started practicing at Green Lotus Yoga with Lona Kovacs last fall and began to explore the wonderful worlds of yoga. So at your workshop, you were adjusting my ankles as I was in downward dog. At first, I didn't understand what you were trying to correct, but eventually it clicked. As we worked through the vinyasa, I came back into downward dog with my arches lifted and with my weight almost completely on the outsides of my feet. Then I got this really intense burning sensation that shot up from the center of my ankle joint and out through the toe right next to my great toe. It really felt like it was on fire. It passed as I worked through the vinyasa, and when I came into downward dog again, I got another intense sensation, but this time it felt intensely cold. I've never felt a sensation like it, but by the next time I was in downward dog, the sensations had passed. After the workshop, I was checking out my ankle, and I found that my range of motion was completely restored!? This was definitely not the case just a week ago. In any case, I'm a true believer, thank you for coming to share your knowledge with the Seacoast, and I look forward to practicing again with your teachings in mind. Hope to see you in Maui some day!

I recently met Eddie and Nicki at the Yoga Journal Conference in Florida where I was working as a volunteer and had the distinct opportunity to door monitor three of their classes. Since the Conference ended I have felt extremely uplifted and inspired by their work. In the spirit of this Thanksgiving season I would like to extend my gratitude and appreciation for two beautiful and inspirational people that have touched my life.
