In loving memory of our beloved Guruji, Sri K Pattabhi Jois It has been quite an intense month for Eddie and I. On May 18, Eddie and I and 2 friends were on our way to Mysore to visit our teacher, Sri K Pattabhi Jois. About 2 hours before we left for the airport, we received a very sad phone call that our dear Guruji had left his body hours earlier. We decided to go ahead and continue with our trip to India. We arrived and there were only a few westerners there at the time. We went to the yogashala immediately and there was already a memorial to guruji in place in the room with flowers piled up around it. I began to cry as soon as I walked into the room. It was a very sad time, and as the days passed and we visited with the Jois family, Saraswati, Sharath, Manju, Shammi, Shrutti, Guruji’s brother, and the children and we were all able to process and share in our grief. It was an auspicious time to be going already and so we felt complete in that. There was a huge beautiful funeral puja held for him on May 31 and hundreds of Yoga students from all over the world came to pay their respects to Pattabhi Jois. My teacher is gone from this world and it will never be the same again. It cannot be. It is an interesting time for me as I reflect on the teachings that I received from him over the years. My overwhelming response is one of extreme gratitude. Gratitude for the years I got to spend with him, and for the intimacy of our relationship. I love him very much and will always carry a piece of him with me. I will dedicate all of my classes over the next year in his honor.
